[reblogged from telegraph]

There is thought to be around 326 million trillion gallons of the wet stuff on our planet. That is quite a bit, isn’t it? And we forget just how powerful it is as well. Flood waters can do an enormous amount of damage in a very short space of time and there is precious little we can do to stop them.

If you are a shopkeeper, then it is crucial to be covered against the possibility of water damage. Having the right type of shop insurance could be the only thing to help keep your business afloat (!) in the aftermath of a flood.

Whatever it is that you trade in; water can cause you a huge loss of earnings. And it isn’t just about your premises getting soaked either… Flood waters are not made up of 100% clean rain water; they will normally be contaminated with the water from our sewers. Eeww, not a nice thought!

Anyone with a special talent will normally rely on a certain part of their anatomy to make their living. Think about it; if you are a professional ballet dancer, then your legs are incredibly important to your career. And a sculptor’s hands hold an amazing amount of value (as well as clay, chisels or shaping tools!). But did you know that these parts of the body can be insured?

Many famous singers have their voices insured and several actors will have a special insurance on their appearances. Some celebrities will even take out a policy to protect their distinctive beard or moustache!

So, if you thought there were only home, car, life and pub insurance policies to consider then think again! The world of insurance is a very large and far more involved business than you would imagine. There are all kinds of different polices to choose from; to protect you against just about anything that you can imagine!

I’ve just been having a look online and it would seem that there are some pretty bizarre insurance policies around…

It may sound a little strange, but a good many people now have cover against such things as vampire/werewolf attacks and alien abductions. It is common knowledge that we have certain problems in our society, but these are all unfamiliar dangers to me…

I thought that insurance was a pretty boring business and only dealt with mundane matters such as flooding, burglary or fire. However, now that I know it can involve lycanthropes, the undead and interstellar life forms, I shall give it far more respect!

The next time I talk to someone about my car insurance, I think I’ll ask a few other questions… along with their pub, home, life and shop insurance, what other policies do they have? And can they offer me any financial reimbursement if I am unfortunate enough to be the victim of a blood-sucking fiend?

[reblogged from blogcdn]

Whatever type of business you have, it is really important to have an adequate amount of insurance. So many things can go wrong in life (and they often will!) and there can be some serious consequences. We all tend to go around with that ‘it’ll never happen to me’ attitude, don’t we? But the truth is that disasters, mishaps and nasty surprises can happen to any of us at any given time.

Let’s say that you ran your own pub for instance. With this kind of business there are plenty of things that could go wrong. Because a large amount of money is kept on your premises it will be a constant target for break-ins. Disorderly behaviour is another worry for any business providing alcohol to customer. Pipes can split, causing leakages of beer and accidental damage is far more likely if you have a large number of staff. You are probably beginning to see why it is so important to have good public house insurance!

Of course, not all pubs are located in busy city centres and you may only have a very small number of regular, well-behaved customers, but things can still go wrong just the same. It is always better to be prepared than to try and pick up the pieces after a disaster takes place in your business!

[reblogged from personal.psu.edu]

If you are a pub owner, then you will know that ninety percent of your patrons are there to have a good time. They enjoy relaxing with a few beers, catching up with the latest gossip and having a good laugh with their friends. However, there are always a small number of drinkers who spoil things for everyone else. Alcohol affects us all differently, but most people will just get silly, soppy or giggly. A far smaller amount of people can get really nasty after having a drink.

Dealing with aggressive customers is never very pleasant and some are much worse than others. It is bad enough if someone is cursing, swearing and generally creating a scene, but physical violence is always a concern. As a pub owner you have to think about your own personal safety, the well-being of your other customers and the items on your premises. Drunk, disgruntled customers can cause damage to your property and it may not even happen there and then; broken windows can come about long after you have closed up…

Most pub insurance policies will protect you against any instances of criminal damage, but some will offer a better amount of protection than others. If you have any doubts about the quality of your current policy then it is well worth changing over to a different insurer.

[reblogged from webshots]

Hotels will normally have a lot of people coming and going through their doors; guests, deliveries, reps and staff. Of course, these are all good signs of a healthy business, but it also means that other individuals can wander in quite easily… Many criminals are opportunists and if they are able to gain entry to your building without being noticed then they have a huge advantage.

Apart from any cash on your premises, you may think there is little for them to steal. But there are some very clever thieves. What is to stop them breaking into rooms and stealing from your guests? They could soon determine whether or not a room is empty by simply knocking on the door. How are your guests to know that they are not a member of your hotel staff?

Also, something else to take into consideration when you are shopping around for your hotel insurance; just how much cover will it give you? And how much safety can you provide to your guests? Thieves should never be underestimated. They will come up with the most ingenious methods and it is vital that your property is protected against as many eventualities as possible…

[reblogged from wordpress]

Running your own second-hand book store can be an absolute pleasure, especially if you are big on reading. And you will always get first choice when it comes to buying-in new stock! But a book store also has a fair share of worry attached… We all know how well paper will burn and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realise that fire is the largest threat to your business.

Fires can start in a number of different ways and it is vital that your shop insurance policy is as comprehensive as possible. Faulty wiring is always a worry and arson is still unpleasantly common. Some businesses may not lose all of their stock in a blaze, but a book shop would be wiped out in a very short space of time.

It is always best to check with an insurer on exactly what you are covered for. And with a book store, fire is one of the first things you should be asking about.

We all make mistakes sometimes because it is part of being human. There will also be plenty of occasions when we just do not want to admit it, but that is part of the human condition as well! Most of the time this is not a big deal; we get something wrong, apologise, dust ourselves down and get on with things. But if you make a mistake when you are giving out professional advice, then it can be a different matter altogether…

If someone makes a claim against you of ‘professional negligence’ then it cannot just be ignored. An allegation must be either admitted to or defended and this will result in costs. This is where professional indemnity insurance comes into use. When all else fails it is there to provide you with the final safety net. It should never be used unless it is absolutely necessary, but having this type of cover will give you great peace of mind. If your job involves giving out professional advice, then PI insurance is a very wise thing to have indeed.
